The key selling point to integrated, centralized high tech GPS dispatch is that it improves both passenger service and driver safety.

It’s a “no-brainer” that service will improve if a passenger can call one number like 311 or other dedicated number to get the nearest available cab regardless of company. As service improves, demand will also increase. Furthermore, with a high tech connection (alert) going directly to police, driver safety will be enhanced. Back up, redundant voice dispatch is essential both for driver dispatcher info and in the event of occasional GPS failure.

Two city mayors endorsed centralized dispatch, now referred to as integrated dispatch; Willie Brown agreed to centralized GPS dispatch in principle in May of 1997 and Gavin Newsom has twice endorsed it in State of the City addresses. I think the time has come for San Francisco to implement an integrated GPT dispatch system. As is always the case, I welcome your opinions, and encourage you to share your views on this topic with me.
